Description

Graveland is provocative artistic response to this turmoil of xenophobic attacks that have been taking place in South Africa. It gives a tale of African families who have been affected by these injustices as a result, they seek to repair the wounds in which it only gets worse for them in their attempts. It gives both perpetrators and victims frame of lens to question whether this is Africa we envisioned. The piece opens out the xenophobia theme in a marvelous way, raw as it is. It balances both victims and perpetrators sides, whereby it hits and reveals at least most of our downfalls of the system and the failure of the citizens to deal with this. It’s about Butana, who came to South Africa for better living and coincidently died during xenophobia attack that took place. His fellow brother Rafael went to report at their homeland. His family decided to visit South Africa for collection of his soul, but they entered the country illegally and caught whilst performing ritual. The hostage did not just end according to the plan due to foreseen elements of certain treatment and emotions. Betrayals, Death, Peace, Love, Happiness, and greediness unfold in this turmoil.
